When discussing the different ways our skin ages in a previous blog post, we briefly mentioned intrinsic aging. Now, it’s time to dig a little deeper and understand what occurs during the phases of intrinsic aging.
A quick recap: Intrinsic aging is the natural process our skin goes through as we get older. Although we can’t entirely stop this process, it’s possible to diminish the signs of aging that appear on the skin. While extrinsic aging is caused by outside factors (pollution, UV rays, stress, and more), intrinsic aging is largely hereditary and controlled by genetics.
Thankfully, intrinsic aging only makes up 10% of the aging process, meaning that 90% can be controlled based on lifestyle habits and preventative measures. One major element to intrinsic aging is the loss of dermal collagen, causing moisture loss. Collagen is crucial to the skin because it’s a protein that provides strength and elasticity. As production slows down, our skin begins to wrinkle and sag. DERMA E’s Advanced Peptides & Collagen line is especially beneficial to incorporate morning and night, as it contains peptides that encourage the skin to create new collagen, as well as powerful anti-aging antioxidants that help improve the skin’s resilience, tone, and texture.
Due to a variety of changes that occur within the skin as we age, one may start to notice dry skin, pigment changes, fine wrinkles, sagging, and the loss of underlying fat. However, we can significantly help improve our physical characteristics by what we put into our bodies. Natural foods with plenty of vitamins and antioxidants act as necessary building blocks to heal the body internally and externally. To make sure your skin is properly absorbing these nutrients, you can also apply DERMA E’s Anti-Wrinkle Treatment Oil, with Vitamins A & E. Vitamin A is also known as the “skin vitamin,” encouraging surface cell renewal, while Vitamin E is famous for its healing benefits, promoting a more vibrant, youthful glow.
Don’t forget- drinking water is extremely important, as it helps hydrate and plump the skin as we get older. Maintaining a skincare regime with beneficial and healing ingredients will ensure that your skin looks healthy and supple, no matter your age.

My understanding of collagen is that it’s molecular structure is to large to be absorbed by the skin’s pores. I am not a chemist though but I read that collagen creams really do not help much because of this?
