While many have been practicing, or attempting to practice gluten free diets, one thing that often gets overlooked is skincare. Just like with the foods we consume; skin can absorb the products that we put on and if you have gluten allergies or are attempting to stay gluten-free, it is important to avoid products that contain gluten.
What is gluten?
Gluten is a general name given to proteins that are found in wheat, barley, and rye. Gluten acts as a glue that holds foods together and helps them maintain their shape. Gluten is commonly found in breads, pastas, sauces, salad dressings, cereal, soups, food colorings and syrups.
How can gluten be harmful?
If you are gluten intolerant, gluten can damage the lining in the small intestine, causing issues in the digestive system. For people with Celiac disease, consuming gluten can be extremely harmful to their health. Even small amounts of gluten can be almost impossible for their bodies to digest.
What skincare ingredients contain gluten?
Many skincare products can contain gluten, and without the gluten-free labeling, it’s best to assume that the product may contain gluten. If you are trying to avoid gluten in your skincare products, avoid products with the following ingredients:
- AMP-isostearoyl hydrolzyed wheat protein
- hydrolyzed wheat protein (HWP)
- barley extract
- hordeum vulgare extract
- malt extract
- hydrolyzed wheat gluten
- triticum lipids
- triticum vulgare
- wheat bran extract
- wheat germ extract
- wheat germ glyceride
