The aging process isn’t solely based on genetics. In reality, there are several external factors that may cause the skin to show signs of aging prematurely. Fortunately, only 10% of aging is intrinsic, meaning it happens naturally as we get older. Extrinsic aging is caused by environmental and lifestyle factors you may come in contact with every day. Once you become aware of what causes premature aging, you can take preventative measures to minimize the effects.

Most of premature aging is due to sun damage. While Vitamin D is very beneficial to your health, too much time spent in the sun leads to photo-aging. UV rays damage skin cells, decreasing their productivity. After awhile, your skin can’t recover from the negative side effects, resulting in age spots, wrinkles, and sagging. To prevent this, use DERMA E’s Natural Mineral Sunscreen every morning to shield your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

Smoking is one of the most controllable extrinsic factors, as it causes chemical changes in the body. This results in an acceleration in the aging process and makes it crucial to avoid. Pollution in the environment can also speed up the aging process. Smog, exhaust, and smoke attack your skin with free radicals, breaking down healthy skin cells. Our digital devices also release free radicals due to their fluorescent lighting, making it imperative to protect your skin by incorporating sun protection and antioxidants, even when not in direct sunlight. DERMA E’s Vitamin C Concentrated Serum provides defense against environmental stresses to help remove free radicals and prevent early signs of aging. This pairs great with the Age-Defying Antioxidant Day Cream, which contains antioxidants 500 times more powerful than Vitamin E at neutralizing free radicals.

Your lifestyle choices can largely prevent the signs of extrinsic aging, so it’s best to be aware of what you’re putting in your body and what you’re exposing your skin to on a daily basis.

  • What products do you recommend for arms, chest and legs that have years of sunburn?

  • Do you make a good AntiAging day cream with an SPF 30 in it? I prefer my lotions and creams in a tube form as they don’t get exposed to the air and lose all those good antioxidants in them. Any chance you will come out with one as I love your products?
